Aikido for Body and Mind

Aikido is a martial art based on traditional Japanese Samurai arts. It is traditionally considered a "soft" martial art because it includes throws and joint locks instead of kicks and punches. Aikido is a wonderful self defense for any one of any size. It is an excellent martial art for kids to learn discipline and respect.

The practice of Zen influences aikido training, making the discipline of the mind as important as that of the body.  As a result, we feel more relaxed throughout the day and are better equipped to deal with whatever life throws at us.

Aikido is a wonderful martial art for self development. Since there is no competition in aikido, our training helps us to challenge ourselves, not others.

A History of Aikido

The roots of aikido are martial, spiritual, and philosophical. Morehei Ueshiba (1883-1969), called O Sensei or "Great Teacher," developed this new practice from his knowledge of Daito-ryu aiki-jujutsu and judo. Widely read in religion and philosophy, O Sensei taught that the ultimate goal of martial art should be peace and reconciliation. Indeed, the word "aikido" means "the way of harmony."

The global unease and destruction brought about during World War II ensured that peoples of many nations would be seeking peace. Aikido was well received in this environment. O Sensei's students brought his teachings to Great Britain, Europe, the United States, and Australia in the 1950s and 1960s.  Today, people all over the world train in the way of harmony.
